The verb “Là”

1/ The verb “Là” (Be) which never changes form, comes after the subject, just as “be” does in English

Tôi là bác sĩ

I am a doctor

Bác sĩ - Doctor

2/ To make it negative, place “không phải” before “Là”

Tôi không phải là bác sĩ

I’m not a doctor

3/ To make it interrogative, place Có phải before Là, then place Không at the end of the sentence.

Cô ấy có phải là sinh viên không?

Is she a student?

Sinh viên  - Student

4/ In a sentence with “be” + adjective, Là is omitted.

Cô ấy đẹp

She’s beautiful

5/ If the adjective is a “negative” one – like Bệnh (Sick) – use the word “Bị” instead of “Là”

Tôi bị bệnh

I’m sick

6/ The verb “là” isn’t used to indicate location – instead, use the preposition “Ở” (At)

Tôi ở Sài Gòn

I’m in Saigon
